Earthquake
How does an earthquake start?
What makes an earthquake happen? The rock of the earth's crust(地壳)may have a
"fault",a kind of break in the surface. The blocks which make up the earth move, and
sometimes this may cause the sides of the fault to move up and down or lengthways(纵向
地)against each other. When one piece of rock starts to rub on another with great force,a
lot of energy is used. This energy is changed into vibrations(振动)and it is these vibrations
that we feel as an earthquake. The vibrations can travel thousands of kilometers and so an
earthquake in Turkey may be felt in Greece.
What to do during an earthquake?
At school
As soon as the earthquake starts, students should get under the desks immediately and
wait until the teacher tells them it is safe to come out.The teacher should,at the same
time, go immediately to the teacher's desk, get underneath(在……下面)it and stay there
till the danger is over. Students must not argue with the teacher or question instructions.
As soon as the tremors(震动)stop, all students should walk towards the exit and go
straight to the school playground or any open space such as a square or a park. They must
wait there until the teacher tells them it is safe to go.
At home
If you are at home when the earthquake occurs, get immediately under the table in the
living room or kitchen.Choose the biggest and strongest table you can find. You must not
go anywhere near the window and don't go out onto the balcony(阳台).Once the tremors
have stopped, you can come out from under the table but you must leave the building
straight away. You should walk down the stairs and should not use the lift一there may be a
power cut as a result of the earthquake and you could find yourself trapped inside the lift for
hours.
In the street
If you are in the street when the earthquake takes place,do not stand near buildings,
fences or walls一move away as quickly as possible and try to find a large open space to wait
in.Standing under trees could also be dangerous.
People knew long ago how an earthquake starts.

The Difference between Man and Computer
What makes people different from computer programs? What is the missing element that our theories don't yet1for?The answer is simple:People read newspaper stories for a reason:to learn more about2they are interested in. Computers,on the other hand, don't. In fact, computers don,t3have interests;there is nothing in particular that they are trying to find out when they read. If a computer4is to be a model of story understanding,it should also read for a“purpose”.
of course, people have several goals that do not make5to attribute to computers. One might read a restaurant guide6order to satisfy hunger or entertainment goals,or to 7a good place to go for a business lunch. Computers do not get hungry, and computers do not have business lunches.
However, these physiological and social goals give8to several intellectual or cognitive goals. A goal to satisfy hunger gives rise to goals to find9about the name of a restaurant which10the desired type of food, how expensive the restaurant is,the location of the restaurant, etc. These are goals to11information or knowledge, what we are call-ing12goals. These goals can be held by computers too;a computer13“want”to find out the location of a restaurant, and read a guide in order to do so14the same way as a person might. While such a goal would not15out of hunger in the case of the com-puter,it might well arise out of the“goal” to learn more about restaurants.

Rockets in the Sky
If someone asked you,"What color is the sky?"I expect that you would answer,"Blue."I am afraid that you would be wrong. The sky has no color. When we see blue,we are looking at blue sunlight. The sunlight is shining on little bits of dust in the air.
We know that there is air all around the world. We could not breathe without air.Airplanes could not fly without air. They need air to lift their wings.Airplanes cannot fly very high because as they go higher the air gets thinner. If we go far enough away from the earth,we find there is no air.
What is the sky?The sky is space. In this space there is nothing except the sun,the moon and all the stars. Scientists have always wanted to know more about the other worlds in the space. They have looked at them through telescopes and in this way they have found out a great deal. The moon is about 384 ,000 kilometers away from the earth. An airplane cann't fly to the moon but there is a thing that can fly even when there is no air. This is rocket.
I am sure that you are asking,"How does a rocket fly?"If you want to know, get a balloon and then blow it up until it is quite big.Do not tie up the neck of the balloon.Let go!The balloon will fly off through the air very quickly. The air inside the balloon tries to get out.It rushes out through the neck of the balloon and this pushes the balloon through the air.It does not need wings like an airplane.
This is how a rocket works. It is not made of rubber(橡胶)like a balloon,of course. It is made of metal. The metal must not be heavy but it must be very strong. There is gas inside the rocket which is made very hot. When it rushes out of the end of the rocket, the rocket is pushed up into the air.
Rockets can fly far out into space.Rockets with men inside them have already reached the moon.Several rockets, without men inside them, have been sent to other worlds much farther away. One day rockets may be able to go anywhere in the space.
A rocket can fly to the moon because______.
A:it looks like a balloon
B:it is much lighter than an airplane
C:it doesn't have wings
D:it works like an untied balloon

Drying Ways for Food
1.Centuries ago,man discovered that removing moisture from food helps to preserve it,and that the easiest way to do this is to expose the food to sun and wind.In this way the North American Indians produce pemmican(dried meat ground into powder and made into cakes),the Scandinavians make stockfish and the Arabs dried dates and"apricot leather".
2.All foods including water, cabbage and other leaf vegetables contain as much as 93%water, potatoes and other root vegetables 80%,lean meat 75%and fish, anything from 20%to 60%,depending on how fatty it is.If this water is removed, the activity of the bacteria which causes food to go bad is checked.
3.Fruit is sun-dried in Asia Minor,Greece,Spain and other Mediterranean countries, and also in California,South Africa and Australia. The methods used vary, but in general, the fruit is spread out on trays in drying yards in the hot sun.In order to prevent darkening, pears, peaches and apricots are exposed to the fumes of burning sulfur before drying. Plums, for making prunes, and certain varieties of grapes for making raisins and currants, are dipped in an alkaline solution in order to crack the skins of the fruit slightly and remove their wax coating,so as to increase the rate of drying.
4.Nowadays most foods are dried mechanically. The conventional method of such dehydration is to put food in chambers through which hot air is blown at temperatures of about 110℃at entry and to about 43℃at exit. This is the usual method for drying such things as vegetables, minced meat, and fish.
5.Liquids such as milk, coffee, tea, soups and eggs may be dried by pouring them over a heated steel cylinder,by spraying them into a chamber through which a current of hot air passes. In the first case, the dried material is scraped off the roller as a thin film which is then broken up into small, though still relatively coarse flakes. In the second process,it falls to the bottom of the chamber as a fine powder. Where recognizable pieces of meat and vegetables are required,as in soup, the ingredients are dried separately and then mixed.
6.Dried foods take up less room and weigh less than the same food packed in cans or frozen, and they do not need to be stored in special conditions. For these reasons they are invaluable to the climbers, explorers and soldiers in battle, who have little storage space. They are also popular with housewives because it takes so little time to cook them.Usually it is just a case of replacing the dried-out moisture with boiling water.
In some places of the world, fruit is usually______.

B:flakes
C:powder
D:controlled
E:increased
F: sun-dried

The First Navigational Lights
In the New World, navigational lights were probably lanterns hung at harbor entrances. The first lighthouse was put up by the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1716 on little Brewster Island at the entrance to Boston Harbor. Paid for and maintained by"light dues"levied on ships, the original beacon was blown up in 1776.By then there were only a dozen of so true lighthouses in the colonies. Little over a century later, there were 700 lighthouses.
The first lighthouses erected on the west coast in the 1850's featured the same basic new England design:a Cape Cod dwelling with the tower rising from the center or standing close by.In New England and elsewhere, though, lighthouses reflected a variety of architectural styles.Since most stations in the Northeast were built on rocky eminences, enormous towers were not the rule. Some were made of stone and brick, others of wood or metal. Some stood on pilings or stilts;some were fastened to rock with iron rods.Farther south from Maryland through the Florida Keys, the coast was low and sandy. It was often necessary to build tall towers there一massive structures like the majestic Cape Hatteras,North Carolina lighthouse, which was lit in 1870.At 190 feet,it is the tallest brick lighthouse in the country.
Notwithstanding differences in appearance and construction, most American lighthouses shared several features:a light, living quarters and sometimes a bell(or,later,a foghorn). They also had something else in common. A keeper and usually, the keeper's family. The keeper' s essential task was trimming the lantern wick in order to maintain a steady, bright flame. The earliest keepers came from every walk of life;they were seamen, farmers, mechanics, rough mill hands and appointments were often handed out by local customs commissioners as political plums. After the administration of lighthouses was taken over in 1 852 by the United states Lighthouse Board,an agency of the Treasury Department, the keeper gradually became highly professional.
What is the best title for this passage?
A: The Life of a lighthouse Keeper.
B:The Modern Profession of lighthouse Keeping.
C:Early Lighthouse in the Unites States.
D: The Lighthouse on Little Brewster Island.

Albert Einstein, whose theories on space time and matter helped unravel the secrets of the atom and of the universe, was chosen as"Person of the Century"by Time Magazine on Sunday.
A man whose very name is synonymous with scientific genius,Einstein has come to represent more than any other person the flowering of 20th century scientific thought that set the stage for the age of technology.
"The world has changed far more in the past 100 years than in any other century in history. The reason is not political or economic, but technological一technologies that flowed directly from advances in basic science,"wrote theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking in a Time essay explaining Einstein's significance._________(46)
Time chose as runner-up President Franklin Roosevelt to represent the triumph of freedom and democracy over fascism, and Mahatma Gandhi as an icon for a century when civil and human rights became crucial factors in global politics.
"What we saw Franklin Roosevelt embodying the great theme of freedoms fight against totalitarianism,Gandhi personifying the great theme of individuals struggling for their rights, and Einstein being both a great genius and a great symbol of a scientific revolution that brought with it amazing technological advances that helped expand the growth of freedom."said Time Magazine Editor Walter Isaacson.
Einstein was born in Ulm,Germany in 1879._________(47)He was slow to learn to speak and did not do well in elementary school. He could not stomach organized learning and loathed taking exams.
In 1905,however,he was to publish a theory which stands as one of the most intricate examples of human imagination in history._________(48)Everything else一mass, weight, space, even time itself—is a variable. And he offered the world his now-famous equation:energy equals mass times the speed of light squared,E=mc2.
_________(49)"There was less faith in absolutes, not only of time and space but also of truth and morality."
Einstein's famous equation was also the seed that led to the development of atomic energy and weapons. In 1939,six years after he fled European fascism and settled at Princeton University,Einstein,an avowed pacifist, signed a letter to President Roosevelt urging the United States to develop an atomic bomb before Nazi Germany did.________(50)Einstein did not work on the project.
Einstein died in Princeton,New Jersey in 1955.
________(48)
A:"Indirectly, relativity paved the way for a new relativism in morality, art and politics," isaacson wrote in an essay explaining Time's choices.
B:How he thought of the relativity theory influenced the general public's view about Albert Einstein.
C:"Clearly,no scientist better represents those advances than Albert Einstein."
D:Roosevelt heeded the advice and formed the"Manhattan Project"that secretly developed the first atomic weapon.
E:In his early years,Einstein did not show the promise of what he was to become.
F:In his"Special Theory of Relativity",Einstein described how the only constant in the universe is the speed of light.

Natural Gas
1 Natural gas is produced from reservoirs deep beneath the earth's surface. It is a fossil fuel(矿物燃
料),meaning that it is derived from orgaiiic material buried in the earth millions of years ago.The main corn-
ponent of natural gas is methane(甲烷).
2 The popularity and use of clean natural gas have increased dramatically over the past 50 years as
pipeline infrastructure(基础设施)has been installed to deliver it conveniently and economically to millions
of residential, commercial and industrial customers worldwide.Today, natural gas service is available in all 50
states in the U.S.,and is the leading energy choice for fueling American homes and industries.More than 65
million American homes use natural gas.In fact, natural gas is the most economical source for home energy
needs, costing one-third as much as electricity. In addition to heating homes, much of the gas used in the
United States is used as a raw material to manufacture a wide variety of products, from paint,to fibers for
clothing,to plastics for healthcare, computing and furnishings.Natural gas is also used in a significant number
of new electricity-generating power plants.
3 Natural gas is one of the safest and cleanest fuels available. It emits(发出)less pollution than other
fossil fuel sources. When natural gas is burned , it produces mostly carbon dioxide(二氧化碳)and water va-
por一the same substances emitted when humans breathe.Compared with some other fossil fuels, natural gas
emits the least amount of carbon dioxide into the air when combusted(燃烧)一making natural gas the clea-
nest burning fossil fuel of all.
4 The United States consumes about one一third of the world's natural gas output, making it the largest
gas-consuming region in the world. The U.S.Department of Energy Information Administration forecasts that
natural gas demand will grow by more than 50 percent by 2025.
5 There are huge reserves of natural gas beneath the earth's surface. The largest reserves of natural
gas can be found in Russia , West and North Africa and the Middle East. LNG(液化天然气)has been pro-
duced domestically and imported in the United States for more than four decades.Today, the leading import-
ers of LNG are Japan,Korea,France and Spain.

Science and Truth
“FINAGLE”(欺骗)is not a word that most people associate with science. One reason is that the image of the scientist is of one who always______ (51)data in an impartial(不偏不倚的)search for truth. In any debate______ ( 52 ) intelligence , schooling , energy—the phrase“science says”usually disarms opposition.
But scientists have long acknowledged the existence of a“finagle factor”—a tendency by many scientists to give a helpful change to the data to______(53)desired results. The latest of the finagle factor in action comes from Stephen Jay Gould,a Harvard biologist, who has ______(54)the important 19th century work of Dr. Samuel George Morton.Morton was fa-mous in his time for analysing the brain______(55)of the skulls as a measure of intelligence.
He concluded that whites had the largest brains, that the brains of Indians and blacks were smaller,and______(56),that whites constitute a superior race.
Gould went back to Morton's original data and concluded that the______(57)were an example of the finagle at work .He found that Morton's“discovery”was made by leaving out embarrassing data,______(58)incorrect procedures, and changing his criteria-again,always in fayour of his argument. Morton has been thoroughly discredited by now and scientists do not believe that brain size reflects______(59).
But Gould went on to say Morton's story is only an example of a common problem in ______(60)work .Some of the leading figures in science are______(61)to have used the finagle factor. Gould says that Isaac Newton fudged out(捏造)to support at least three central statements that he could not prove .And so______(62)Laudius Ptolemy, the Greek astronomer, whose master work,Almagest, summed up the case for a solar system that had the earth asits centre .Recent______(63)indicate that Ptolemy either faked some key data or resorted heavily to the finagle factor.
All this is important because the finagle factor is still at work. For example,in the artificial sweetener controversy,it is______(64)that all the studies sponsored by the sugar industry find that the artificial sweetener is unsafe,______(65)all the studies sponsored by the diet food industry find nothing wrong with it.
59._________
A:. creativity
B: reliability
C: intelligence
D: originality
