Smoking can Increase Depressive Symptoms in Teens
While some teenagers may use cigarettes to "self-medicate"(自我治疗)against the blues(忧郁),sci-
entists at the University of Toronto and the University of Montreal have found that smoking may actually

"This observational study is one of the few to examine the perceived ______________(52)benefits of
smoking among teens,"says lead researcher Michael Chaiton,a research associate at the Ontario Tobacco
Research Unit of the University of Toronto."_______________(53)cigarettes may appear to have self-medicating
effects or to improve mood,in the long_______________(54)we found that teens who started to smoke reported
higher depressive symptoms."
As part of the study, some 662 high school teenagers completed up to 20 questionnaires about their use
of cigarettes to ______________

Breakfast
Studies show that children who eat breakfast do better in school. It doesn't take much
further thought to believe that adults will feel better and perform better at work as well.
Whether you work at home,on the farm,at the office,at school,or on the road,it is not
a good idea to skip(故意略去)breakfast.
If we don't eat breakfast,we are likely to become tired when our brains and bodies run
low on fuel.By mid-morning,a lot of us grab a cup of coffee,or wolf down a sugary candy
bar to wake up again. This might work for a few minutes, but by lunchtime we are hungry,
bad-tempered,and perhaps our mood might make us a little more likely to make unhealthy
choices at lunch.Eating a good breakfast sets the tone for the rest of the day.
People who eat breakfast are generally more likely to maintain a healthy weight. Many
people believe that they will lose weight if they skip meals, but that isn't a good idea. The
body expects to be refueled a few times a day, so start with a healthy breakfast.
A healthy breakfast should contain some protein(蛋白质)and some fiber(纤维).Protein
can come from meat, eggs, beans,or soy(大豆).Fiber can be found in whole cereals(谷
物),grains or in fruits.A good example of a healthy breakfast might be something simple
like a hard boiled egg,an orange, and a bowl of whole grain cereal with soy milk.
Adults who eat breakfast will perform better at work.

As we have seen, the focus of medical care in our society has been shifting from curing disease to preventing disease一especially in terms of changing our many unhealthy behaviors, such as poor eating habits, smoking, and failure to exercise. The line of thought involved in this shift can be pursued further. Imagine a person who is about the right weight , but does not eat very nutritious(有营养的)foods , who feels OK but exercises only occasionally , who goes to work every day , but is not an outstanding worker, who drinks a few beers at home most nights but does not drive while drunk, and who has no chest pains or abnormal blood counts, but sleeps a lot and often feels tired. This person is not ill.He may not even be at risk for any particular disease. But we can imagine that this person could be a lot healthier.
The field of medicine has not traditionally distinguished between someone who is merely "not ill" and someone who is in excellent health and pays attention to the body's special needs. Both types have simply been called "well".In recent years, however, some health specialists have begun to apply the terms "well" and "weilness" only to those who are actively striving to maintain and improve their body's condition. Most importantly, perhaps, people who are well take active responsibility for all matters related to their health.Even people who have a physical disease or handicap(缺陷)may be "well" ,in this new sense,if they make an effort to maintain the best possible health they can in the face of their physical limitations."Wellness" may perhaps best be viewed not as a state that people can achieve, but as an ideal that people can strive for. People who are well are likely to be better able to resist disease and to fight disease when it strikes. And by focusing attention on healthy ways of living, the concept of weilness can have a beneficial impact on the way in which people face the challenges of daily life.
The first paragraph implies that_________.
A:good health is more than not being ill
B:sleeping a lot could be harmful
C:regular health checks are essential to keeping fit
D:prevention is more difficult than care

Lifetime Employment in Japanese Companies
In most large Japanese companies, there is a policy of lifetime employment. What this means is that when people leave school or university to join an enterprise, they can expect to remain with that organization until they retire. In effect, the employee gets job security for life, and can only be fired for serious mistakes in work.Even in times of business recession,he or she is free from the fear of being laid off.
One result of this practice is that the Japanese worker identifies closely with his company and feels strong loyalty to it.By working hard for the company,he believes he is safeguarding his own future. It is not surprising that devotion to one's company is considered a great virtue in Japan.A man is often prepared to put his firm's interests before those of his immediate family.
The job security guaranteed by this system influences the way employees approach their work. They tend to think in terms of what they can achieve throughout their career. This is because they are not judged on how they are performing during a short period of time. They can afford to take a longer perspective than their western counterparts.
This marriage between the employee and the company-the consequence of lifetime employment-may explain why Japanese workers seem positively to love the products their company is producing and why they are willing to stay on after work, for little overtime pay,to participate in earnest discussions about the quality control of their products.
Lifetime employment in the Japanese company perhaps means that the employee can make serious mistakes in work.

Ha!The Sdence of When We Laugh and Why
It's certainly possible to over-analyze a joke._______(46)Considering the abundant research on the topic, maybe not.
Scott Weems,a neuroscientist, takes readers on a wide-ranging tour that explains what humor is and why readers should care.______(47)Humor improves interpersonal relationships, and studies show that simply watching a funny movie can lower stress, improve immune system response and even help viewers better solve problems.
The complexity of the human brain makes humor possible,Weems argues, and it also helps explain how some people can find a joke hilarious while others deem it grossly offensive.
Humor takes many forms-as many as 44 by one researcher's count-but shares certain traits and themes. From puns and riddles to slapstick(打闹剧),humor is inherently subversive , Weems says , often treating serious subjects with frivolity(轻浮)or even rudeness.______(48) Ha ! Isn ' t a self-help guide to being funny , though a careful reader can find useful nuggets(块金) throughout?______( 49 ) Surprise helps , too , whether it ' s the incongruity(不协调)of an elephant hiding in a cherry tree or the absolute improbability of Raquel Welch and the pope ending up in the same lifeboat.
The final chapter divulges(透露)Weems's semi-successful attempt at stand-up comedy. He got a few laughs,he says, but not where he expected them. ______(50)The joke that got Weems the most laughs, and judged by one website's readers as the best in the world,is a story that he had practiced many dozens, maybe hundreds,of times.

Renewable Energy Sources
Today petroleum(石油)provides around 40% of the world's energy needs , mostly
fuelling automobiles.Coal is still used, mostly in power stations,to cover one一quarter of
our energy needs, but it is the least efficient, unhealthiest and most environmentally
damaging fossil fuel(矿物燃料).Natural gas reserves could fill some of the gap from oil,
but reserves of that will not last into the 22nd century either. Most experts predict we will
exhaust easily accessible reserves within 50 years.Less-polluting renewable energy
sources offer a more practical long-term energy solution. "Renewable"refers to the fact t
hat these resources are not used faster than they can be replaced.
Hydroelectric(水力发电的)power is now the most common form of renewable energy,
supplying around 20%of world electricity.China's Three Gorges Dam is the largest ever.
At five times the size of the US's Hoover Dam , its 26 turbines(涡轮机)will generate the
equivalent energy of 18 coal-fired power stations. It will satisfy 3% of China's entire electricity demand.
In 2003, the first commercial power station to use tidal(潮汐的)currents in the open
sea opened in Norway. It is designed like windmill(风车),but others take the form of
turbines.
As prices fall, wind power has become the fastest growing type of electricity generation一
quadrupling(翻两番)worldwide between 1999 and 2005. Modern wind farms consist of
turbines that generate electricity.Though it will be more expensive, there is more than
enough wind to provide the world's entire energy needs.Wind farms come in onshore and
offshore forms. They can often end up at spots of natural beauty, and are often unpopular
with residents. And turbines are not totally harmless一they can intertere with radar, alter
climate and kill sea birds.Scotland is building Europe's largest wind farm, which will power
200,000 homes. The UK's goal is to generate one-fifth of power from renewable sources,
mainly wind,by 2020.But this may cause problems, because wind is unreliable.
China's Three Gorges Dam
A:is the first hydroelectric dam in the world.
B:is of the same size as the US's Hoover Dam.
C:can generate around 3%of world electricity.
D:is the largest hydroelectric dam in the world.

First Image-recognition Software
1. Dartmouth researchers and their colleagues have created an artificial intelligence software that uses photos to locate documents on the Internet with far greater accuracy than ever before.
2. The new system, which was tested on photos and is now being applied to videos, shows for the first time that a machine learning algorithm(运算法则)for image recognition and retrieval is ac-curate and efficient enough to improve large-scale document searches online. The system uses pix- el(像素)data in images and potentially video—rather than just text-to locate documents. It learns to recognize the pixels associated with a search phrase by studying the results from text-based image search engines. The knowledge gleaned(收集)from those results can then be ap-plied to other photos without tags or captions(图片说明),making for more accurate document search results.
3 .“Over the last 30 years,”says Associate Professor Lorenzo Torresani,a co-author of the stud-
“the Web has evolved from a small collection of mostly text documents to a modern, massive, fast-growing multimedia data set, where nearly every page includes multiple pictures or videos. When a person looks at a Web page, he immediately gets the gist(主旨)of it by looking at the pictures in it.Yet,surprisingly, all existing popular search engines, such as Google or Bing, strip away the information contained in the photos and use exclusively the text of Web pages to perform the document retrieval. Our study is the first to show that modern machine vision systems are accurate and efficient enough to make effective use of the information contained in image pix-els to improve document search.”
The researchers designed and tested a machine vision system—a type of artificial intelligence that allows computers to learn without being explicitly programmed—that extracts semantic(语义的)information from the pixels of photos in Web pages. This information is used to enrich the description of the HTML page used by search engines for document retrieval. The researchers tested their approach using more than 600 search queries(查询)on a database of 50 million Web pa-ges.They selected the text-retrieval search engine with the best performance and modified it to make use of the additional semantic information extracted by their method from the pictures of the Web pages .They found that this produced a 30 percent improvement in precision over the original search engine purely based on text.
